Domestic chaos ensues, resulting in "...a year's worth of hilarious observations and amusing anecdotes." - Kirkus ReviewUnknownnoreply@blogger.comBlogger488125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4149549565165994574.post-88148283643072896122014-04-02T19:09:00.000-04:002014-04-23T15:19:12.065-04:00'Our Year at The Fahm' - After 4.5 *Actual Years* - is Drawing to a Close

As all good things must do, our time here at The Fahm as full time residents is slowly drawing to a close. I am fresh off a month-long employment and housing exploration in my favorite hometown ever, Santa Cruz, CA, where we will be relocating - at least part-time - sooner rather than later.

The plan has been in the works for more than a few months and we are slooowly starting to see results in the form of multiple job interviews become reality squeezed in between walking Molly (Mom's new dog; along West Cliff Dr. and the rest of the west side), visiting The Buttery and Emily's, frequenting New Leaf Market (downtown and west side), Trader Joe's (downtown), Safeway (west side), visits with Elizabeth Quinn near the yacht harbor, and more trips than I care to admit to Bookshop Santa Cruz (downtown).

O! I do so love Santa Cruz, that hippie-welcoming, patchouli-scenting, alternative lifestyle-promoting, CSA/Homeless Project-pioneering, surf-obsessing, consciousness-raising, Silicon Beach-aspiring, sea lion-loving, Poop Fairy-denying, tree-hugging, real estate price-gouging sanctuary on the Montery Bay, where my family history stretches back over three decades, and our "ancestral manse" (such as it is) is located...

Much has changed for me, for us, for everyone, since late 2009 when we last resided in the San Francisco Bay Area, and even more has changed since I left Santa Cruz (under protest) for Oakland in 2002. Some for better, some for worse, some TBD. But this is a homecoming nevertheless, and excitement abounds!

Moving forward, there will likely be no more NEW Our Year at The Fahm posts. Should you wish to, you can follow details of my new exploits, adventures, art works, and items of general interest at the blushingly bare (for the moment) www.SaraParker411.blogspot.com. Last weekend Raj and I took a little road trip to the Berkshires and beyond to hear some music, see some friends, and make a short literary excursion to North Bennington. We left the Fahm during a snowstorm which is something we rarely do. For one thing, driving during a snowstorm is no picnic, and for another, well, we just don't. Real snowstorms inspire my coziest fantasies of being near a roaring fire with a book or a game of Scrabble. Driving away from the Fahm in the snow seemed rather strange.

We met Dean and Marley at the dumpy little motel where I mistakenly made reservations having been led to believe that the place might actually be worth the 4-star traveler's rating listed on Hotwire. The room reeked of cheap air freshener which we began calling fresh country air; and when Dean requested extra towels, they were delivered to the room by a woman wearing pajamas and a robe which we found a little odd especially since it was still daylight when she appeared at the door. The furnishings were the height of fashion the decade before I was born although the television was of more recent vintage being only approximately 30 years old. Only the finest establishments for us NOT. The only thing The No Name Inn had going for it was that it was located immediately adjacent to the Vermont border.

Note to self: next time, stay at the Holiday Inn or Howard Johnson's or any other chain where the surroundings are likely less rustic than at The No Name Inn. Resigned to our fate (and non-refundable room payment) we got in the car and drove to the Holiday Inn which not coincidentally is where we ate supper in the tiny town of North Adams, MA, on our way to see roots reggae Rastafarian Burning Spear play at Mass MOCA. From supper we walked to the museum.
There were many feet of snow on the ground and it was very cold, just single digits.
We retrieved our tickets from will-call without incident and were issued wrist bands. Burning Spear plays reggae music and we were among an eclectic crowd of all ages, although being the Berkshires and all, it was primarily white folks in the audience. That's OK, we like white folks just fine. ;)

Because the Holiday Inn restaurant had taken a leisurely approach to serving our supper, we didn't have long to wait before the show began.

The four of us wriggled our way up as close to the stage as possible; it was a great crowd and people just let us sort of ooze our way to the front with no problem. Then the band started playing, and everyone was dancing, and it was nuts. I had to excuse myself more than once to get cool air on my skin; 2,100 people dancing in close proximity to one another generate a lot of body heat! After playing a nice long set and three encores, the show ended. We walked back to the car sweaty and exhilarated.

We got back to the motel and Marley ducked into the bathroom for a quick shower. He emerged, shivering, moments later; the hot water had run out. We turned on Winter Olympics reruns, none of us expecting to sleep but we did, until early the next morning when we stumbled out of bed, checked out, and went to the Chef's Hat Diner for breakfast.

After breakfast, Marley had dreams of snowboarding down the Thunderbolt Ski Trail on Mount Greylock so we were headed down to Adams to drop him off at the top. We had no fixed idea as to where the Thunderbolt Ski Trail was actually located so we eventually found ourselves at the Adams Visitor Center...

It was as we mumbled despairingly in the parking lot that a kindly pedestrian approached who happened to be a volunteer at the Adams Visitor Center so he was able to fill in a few gaps for us. Most importantly, that roads up Mount Greylock are also closed, for the winter, unless there is a special event.

Shortly after that we parted ways with Dean and Marley. They were headed home so Marley could get to his Sunday afternoon job at the Wendell Country Store, the slogan of which is, "We're all here 'cause we're not all there"; we were headed back north to Vermont, specifically, North Bennington, Vermont, on a literary adventure.

Last week, hardware stores began running low on snow removal supplies and by the time the last storm was over, they were pretty much out. There wasn't a roof rake, snow shovel, or box of hockey puck salt tabs to be found anywhere, not to mention snow blowers. When Home Depot is sold out of a big ticket seasonal staple like a snow blower, you know you're having a serious winter.

The good news is, I have found a way to reuse our sock singles! In a fit of DIY, I asked Raj to rummage through his sock drawer for singles and worn out socks while I bustled off to the hardware store for a bag of calcium chloride. Raj managed to produce 19 socks and I filled them each with a fist-sized portion of the stuff. We raked the roofs and flung the sock bombs strategically which means aiming for just behind the bigger icicles. The sock bombs are so much better than the hockey pucks in terms of placement; the downside is, in the spring we will have 19 filthy socks sitting on our roofs like dead things the cats might drag in to our bedroom.

Everyone, at this point, except those who have the great good fortune to live in a perfectly insulated home David & Monique has ice dams, ice cycles, and way too much snow on their roof. Roofs are collapsing all over New England, while I know of at least one poor man in Worcester who had a heart attack and died while clearing snow from his roof. Even stoic New Englanders are shaking their heads over this hard Wintah - though I still note latent pride beneath their complaints. This Wintah will go down in the record books in terms of snow fall if nothing else, and a legendary winter spawns legendary ...well... legends.

ANYBACKTOTHEHARDWARESTOREWAY

Two days ago I dropped by the hardware store with the wild idea that they might have a snow rake or two I could drag back to The Fahm. The entry area was crowded with people gathered around a giant cart filled with boxes of hockey puck tabs, just in. One woman was juggling her toddler daughter, a shopping cart, two buckets of tabs, and a giant...wait...what is that? AN ELECTRIC SNOW SHOVEL?

I didn't actually use my elbows to force my way through the crowd and stake my claim on the last electric snow shovel in Worcester County but I may have put on a little of my Crazy Face, which works better anyway. I put my arm possessively around my new best shovel friend, two-stepped over to the salt cart, and using perfect restraint, took only one bucket. By this time there were fewer than ten buckets left when moments before there had been nearly forty.

I arrived back at The Fahm just in time to find Raj in crisis mode dealing with a DAM LEAK in the kitchen. He was in the process of hooking up a hose to the hot water tab in the laundry room; by the time I had on the requisite layers for working outside, he had the hose out the kitchen window and was enveloped in steam, drilling a tunnel in the ice. I started out to join him but after stepping through the snow up to my thighs three or four times, I went back to the Coal Room, put on my snow shoes, and tried again.

I took my turn making dam tunnels and other than alternately freezing and scalding my hands, it was actually kind of fun. We put four tunnels in, right through the largest icicles, and within minutes the leak stopped. We tossed salty pucks up, brought the hose in, mopped up the floor, and called it a day.

Today another storm is due, with the possibility of an additional 4 - 6" of snow on the ground before it passes through.

I have been having a serious craving for soy chorizo from Trader Joe's, so much so that we made the 40 minute pilgrimage to the closest store, in Shrewsbury, MA.
The refrigerated tofu and fake meat section at Trader Joe's was filled with all manner of faux ground beef, "chicken" cutlets, sweet and sour "pork", Tofurkey, firm tofu, silken tofu, and seiten (SATAN!!). Not a speck of soy chorizo though, no matter how hard we looked or how many employees we asked, NOTHING.

I guess I'm going to have to learn how to make my own. Do I have to do everything myself??

I'm sure there is a language for writing about figure skating although I don't know it; my only language to express skating is that of dance and music. I'm a music fan of Irish American ancestry, finding the Riverdance music particularly moving; I am culturally encoded to find the rhythms and expressions moving, sometimes enough so to bring tears to my eyes or me to my feet.

Jason Brown's performance at the recent U.S. Nationals held in Boston blended dance, music and skating with such breathtaking results that I find myself uncharacteristically at a loss for words. Indeed, his performance must be experienced to be understood.
No matter my previous awful schadenfreudeish new word inclinations, this is one skater I want to see execute without falling. The sheer joie de vivre of his performance deserves nothing less. What is This, Boot Camp? Hell Week? It's easy to get confused, what with the twice a day workouts and all, getting snow and ice off the roof(s) before the next cold snap and/or snow surge. We've had a couple of days 'warm' enough for the ice icicles to start some serious melting, although we still ended up on a ladder just outside the kitchen window armed with a mini sledge hammer and protective eye-ware, literally beating back the ice.
I ordered a 20' long roof rake from the Internets which should arrive before the next storm; in the meantime, Our Dear Neighbor David loaned us theirs for the afternoon so Raj tackled the tall roof while I banged away at the kitchen. We've had two leaks so far, both in the kitchen just over the back door, once briefly joined by a leak over the sink. We put out our buckets, put on our snow shoes, hats, gloves, and the rest of the thirty-nine layers required, then waddle around back for more de-icing. As the removal proceeds, the leaks get smaller and then stop entirely which is how we know we're hitting the appropriate spots.

After a couple of days of relatively warm temperatures, the weather turned exceptionally cold (again) so everything froze (again), adding 'ice on walking surfaces' to the list of Things to Love About New England Winter NOT that I've been compiling. I have also begun an apprenticeship in Salt Sprinkling on Snow, a key skill for survival around here. Sprinkling salt on ice sounds just like Pop Rocks candy which is a cheerful sound and I quite enjoyed my useful little chore.

Since then, loud roars and thumps announce the downfall of even the largest of the Malevolent Beasties. Raj wants to drag them all into a circle and stand them up on end, thereby creating Icehenge here at The Fahm. Whether we do that or not, we have piles and stumps of pale blue-colored ice all over the place, looking like refugees from The Island of Misfit Glass Bricks.
"What a delightful book! Sara Parker gives us an unvarnished tour of her new life with her tongue in her cheek and her heart on her sleeve. It reminded me a little of "George Washington Slept Here" where city folk get countrified the hard way.

Sara shares her woes and triumphs with such humor - both extra dry and fairily whimsical - that I become involved immediately, and stayed that way. A real page-turner. She treats language like a lovely lump of Play-Dough, sometimes creating words, phrases and names for inanimate objects that convey their essence far more effectively than conventional wordery can. (It's catching!)

Although this true account is often a romp worthy of Lucy, it also ventures fearlessly to lonely places, human frailties, political insights, world woes, love of animals, as well as rampant mouse poo and homemade applesauce. It shows us how hard hard work can be, the shock of sudden crises, and helps us, by example, to go with the flow. It honors the beauty of Nature. It celebrates good people and laughs at the meanies. Like the official who railed against local beavers building dams without permits. No kidding.

It connected with me on many levels. Sara's every response to her new life is informed by her big sensitive heart, which in turn warmed mine. My inner child smiles. Her subtitle suits her - she lets in the light. Recommended."

I am humbled.

There has been speculation in Jazzercise that the conflict wasn't about infidelity exactly, rather it is whispered that swinging was involved. It is widely known that there was a party on the evening of December 5, and that both the deceased and her husband were in attendance, along with other well-known town denizens; the rest of the guest list for that party is still a mystery. Princeton police are mum (as are other first responders) due to the fact that there is an ongoing investigation.
2013 was not a good year for me. While not as horrific as 2011 (the year my Dad died), 2013 nevertheless sucked in its very own special way. Losing Tricksy in late November was a final, horrible capstone to a pretty awful year.

Valentino's Ghost: The Politics Behind Images, is the hard-edged film I hope you have already been hearing about. The film exposes ways in which the U.S. foreign policy agenda in the Middle East drives and shapes the mainstream media's and Hollywood's portrayals of Arabs, Muslims, and Islam. It is not for the faint of heart. Click here to see the trailer.

Designated a Critics' Pick by The New York Times, called "brilliant" by @MJayRosenberg, and "thrilling" by The Village Voice, Valentino's Ghost received six figures of funding from PBS, which is showing only its truncated version due to controversies raised by the film.

Valentino's Ghost: The Politics Behind Images has qualified for Oscar® consideration for the 86th Academy Awards®, and we are simultaneously trying to go wide with self-distribution, hence this post asking for your financial support toward the cost of spreading the word about this film, which I am proud to say I have had some small involvement in. The IndieGoGo campaign site is here.

Your support, no matter how small, would give this film the higher profile it needs in its dual mission for Oscar® consideration and self-distribution. No American distributor will touch it. Neither will any major American film festival, even though the Director of the world's oldest and most prestigious Venice Film Festival, Alberto Barbera, said, "Valentino's Ghost is a great and very important film."

I hope you will conclude that the Valentino's Ghost project and predicament merit your support. You can view the trailer and see more reviews at www.valentinosghost.com. Please help.
